Vitamins, Supplements, and DS....what are your thoughts?

Ok, I know I may be opening a big door for disagreements, but I would really like to know what people' s thoughts are on supplements and vitamins for our kiddos with DS..i.e. Nutrivene, Fish oil, etc....

Addie is going to be one and I am just starting to really look into these things and would like some imput...

Good and bad, good success, bad success, etc....

  1. Hi Erin... this is a loaded question, as you know. I can only speak from my experience... We have Braska on only a multivitamin (Polyvisol) and that's all we've done or will do for the forseeable future. I'm sure there are other things that are fine, but when we asked our DS center here about what they recommend or what they know about, they said they had seen lots of kids on the Nutrivene and MSB and all the others and they had seen nothing in research or in their own patients that showed any advantage to them. Some parents swear by them, though...but I'm not willing to risk the unknown, personally, and I'm pleased with Braska's health (never had an ear infection and only one cold in 31 months) and with her progress cognitively, so I don't see a need.

That's my 2 cents. And it's probably not even worth THAT much. :)

Oh and here's a link to one of Dr. Leshin's article on this... you've probably seen it, but just in case. http://www.quackwatch.com/01QuackeryRelatedTopics/down.html

  3. We use MSB + with mayson!! She has been our healthiest kid!! A lot of research has gone into it. Our kids don't have the same make up as we do and don't break things down like us. Its been very successful for us!

  5. We've used MSB+ with Kayla since she was about 6 months old. Does it help? Who knows. I just look at it as a targeted multivitamin because she eats like 3 foods. Do I see a difference when she's off it and when she's on it? Not really.

  6. I give Kayla a regular children's multi-vitamin and a few times she's had fish oil supplement (cause I've had a sample!) but I want to start giving her the fish oil regularly now (I take it) just because I don't eat seafood so it's not in the house or in their diets either. As for Nutrivene etc, I haven't done a whole lot of research on it myself, I know it's controversial, I just balk at the cost of it. I do have to wonder though - if it is so beneficial for our kids how come it needs to cost so much and isn't more affordable, and how come the pediatricians don't suggest it? I don't know - a lot to think about. There isn't any right or wrong answer, just have to do what is right for your own family I guess :)
